Meaningful Student Impact

Students are changed through the process of becoming an MMUN delegate. Representing a country is a very real activity for a young person, not just a simulation, and they discover that they can become active in solving real-world problems. That discovery lasts a life-time.

Anatomy of a
Conference

Opening Ceremony

Feel the excitement as each conference is launched! This formal ceremony opens the simulation where students publicly represent their country delegations.

Celebration of Nations

The Opening Ceremony begins with a Celebration of Nations, where each country delegation’s flag is represented. School groups also prepare Country Presentations so that all delegations can learn more about the other nations represented.

Committee Sessions

Students learn how to work in teams online or in-person, interact with other cultures, and follow rules of procedure like those at the UN.

Social Events

Delegates share world cultures by performing musical numbers, sharing traditional recipes, providing a language demo related to either their home country or the country that they are representing during the conference.

SDG Design

Consistent with Maria Montessori’s vision of having children collaborate to find solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, participating students submit a design that illustrates one particular SDG highlighting the theme for the conference.

Songwriting

Selected delegates work with Emmy nominated talent during each conference to compose an original song and lyrics surrounding world issues, and then to perform it live.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

Working Sessions

The students participate in two Working Sessions in English where they apply committee protocol to pressing societal questions with their peers, engaging them to think creatively about global issues that specifically affect young people while gaining confidence in the process.

Student Meet-ups

Students become socially familiar with the MMUN international peer community while they have fun together at social events like Community Meet-Ups where they have informal exchanges and do activities which contribute to their sense of belonging to a larger international community beyond their classroom.

COORDINATOR MEETUPS

Teacher and Parent Coordinators registered for the program, also have the opportunity to meetup twice within the year to discuss best practices with MMUN staff and other coordinators who are also preparing students.

YLP WORKSHOPS

Parents, Observers and Chaperones are supported with workshops on topics such as Fostering Global Ambassadorship, Practicing Negotiation Outside of Committee, which offer guidance for how to help their student delegates as they prepare for committee debate and negotiation.

Conference

To culminate the program, students attend an international conference of their choice where they work together and socialize (over 8 days for an online conference and 4 for onsite conferences). The final result is a transformational experience as they negotiate with their peers on the solutions to world problems, witnessing the impact of their voices and vision.
