Different to make
a difference
The Montessori Model UN approach is consensus based. Just like the UN General Assembly, it’s about negotiation and inclusion… the real reward is finding a resolution to real-world problems. We involve students from 9 years of age because at this particular age, children begin to develop a strong sense of social justice.
Delegate Roadmap
to a Conference
01
Students and teachers select a country. Each country participates in committees based on the current UN agenda.
02
Students study the scope, mandates & history of the UN, including what it can and cannot do.
03
Students research their representative country and prepare country display materials to share during the conference.
04
Students investigate the committee objectives and assigned topics including past positions and proposed solutions, regional alliances, and more.
01
Meet peers from other geographic locales in working sessions and social meet-ups during the months before a conference event
02
Share your creativity by producing a handmade flag of your country, demonstrating a language or giving cultural performance, producing visual designs that depict an SDG, or writing song lyrics to encourage youth awareness and activism
03
Hang-out with new friends between and after your committee sessions during the conference in a variety of relaxed, social and celebratory events
01
Student delegates pair up with a partner to develop positions and solutions that they will propose to their committee.
02
Student delegates formulate their ideas in a written position paper for each topic and summarize their points in a speech to present orally to the committee.
01
Students learn the UN Rules of Procedure and how real Ambassadors negotiate to build consensus.
02
Students practice drafting resolutions, learning the differences between operative and pre-ambulatory phrases and adhering to UN resolution protocol.
03
Students practice decorum, comportment and diplomatic language.
WHAT WE DISCUSS?
The topics for debate are aligned with the United Nations Agenda for the year of each conference. MMUN selects relevant topics for each committee. Topics are also associated with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations Member States in 2015 with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Awaken global social consciousness by giving the opportunity to share solutions for a better world
Channel curiosity and awareness into creative solutions for the world’s problems on the UN agenda, through research skills and use of critical thinking
Contribute to honing soft and hard english language skills, as students develop global solutions through collaboration and cooperation
Enable students to acquire a global perspective by interacting with peers from different countries, cultures and backgrounds, gaining a deeper appreciation of our shared humanity
Appeal to the sensitivity of 9-15 year olds toward reason, justice and morality
NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.
Meaningful Student Impact
Students are changed through the process of becoming an MMUN delegate. Representing a country is a very real activity for a young person, not just a simulation, and they discover that they can become active in solving real-world problems. That discovery lasts a life-time.
