Q: Why should I participate in Montessori Model United Nations?

MMUN promotes students’ and teachers’ interest in the world around them and broadens a student’s knowledge in a variety of subjects. It teaches vital skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, research and communication. It also gives students and teachers the opportunity to meet interesting new people and make new friends.

Q: How can I enroll my students to participate in a Montessori Model United Nations Conference? 

In order to participate in the MMUN conferences, the teachers leading the student delegates are required to take the MMUN Teacher Workshop. This training is a two-day course to enable teachers to effectively prepare the students to attend the MMUN conferences. For teachers new to MMUN this is an obligatory component. The upcoming workshops are displayed on the MMUN homepage.

Q: Do I have to register for the MMUN Teacher Workshop even if I have already participated in other Model UN Conferences?  How is MMUN different? 

Yes.  We require all schools new to MMUN to send at least one teacher to the MMUN Teacher Workshop prior to registering your school and delegates. MMUN is not competitive and does not give awards or prizes like some MUN organizations. The reason is that neither does the UN. The goal for UN Ambassadors is to foster the interests of their country while creating collaborative agreements with other member states. MMUN focuses on assisting the delegates find common ground and create one consensus-based resolution per topic. Another important difference is that the MMUN Rules of Procedure are not parliamentary because the UN is not a parliamentary forum, but one where each member state is sovereign. MMUN encourages delegates to find their voice about global issues and implement their ideas into social action plans.

Q: How many times do I need to take the MMUN Teacher Workshop?

Once. However, you may be required to attend webinar refresher sessions online whenever there is any curricular change to the program.

Q: Will I need to take the training if I move to another school?

A: No. As a MMUN Certified Teacher, you are not required to take the on-site training again if you move to another school. Bear in mind MMUN Certified Teachers may be required to attend webinar refresher sessions online whenever there is any curricular change to the Program.

Q: What if the MMUN Certified Teacher moves on from our school?

Once the MMUN Certified Teacher leaves a school, the credentials go with them.  Even school groups that have participated in MMUN for years would be required to send another teacher to become trained to be an MMUN Certified Teacher.  This is why we always recommend to have more than one MMUN Certified Teacher on staff to avoid these scenarios.

Q: Can I train multiple delegations if become a certified MMUN Teacher?

Once you become a certified MMUN teacher, you will be able to bring one delegation at a time to a conference.  You will not be able to train separate delegations to attend the same conference.  This must be housed under one registration group (which includes upper elementary and middle school groups).

Q: Can only Montessori schools participate in MMUN?

MMUN is open to all schools, Montessori or not. Although all teachers are required to attend the MMUN Teacher Workshop prior to leading a delegation to a MMUN conference.

Q: Can parents also take the MMUN Teacher Workshop?

Yes. Parents are welcome to attend the MMUN Teacher Workshop in order to effectively prepare student delegates to attend a MMUN Conference.
