Dear MMUN Community,
As organizers of several large international youth conferences each year, we face similar issues that any event struggles with. The first is how do you make sure everyone has all of their basic needs met. Water is, of course, a primary concern and with it comes the obligatory plastic cup. Unfortunately, at the end of each committee session, we have huge bins full of single-use plastic outside each room. Globally 300 million tons of plastic each year is manufactured, about half of which is used only once and then thrown away. As an organization committed to global goals we want to do better, but we need your support.
Our plan is to provide water dispensers but to no longer provide single-use cups. As a believer in inspiring youth, we want to highlight that everyone has a role to play in the reduction of single-use plastic. We can do better if we all work together. We would like participants to bring their own water bottles and/or purchase one to use at the conference. We will have some for sale at the MMUN Shop or people can purchase a water bottle outside of the conference.
We hope that you can join us in our new initiatives to help “green” our conference. We know this will take an adjustment and perhaps be frustrating at times, but it is a small ask, and we want to be an organization that lives its values. Thank you for supporting us; even the smallest deed can make a difference when we work together.
