Journalism, Your Voice & The United Nations – For Students Ages 10-18

Students with an invested interest in global affairs and UN policy are invited to join ModelUN.News in New York City from July 16th – July 22nd , 2017 at Columbia University for a weeklong summer academy program.  The academy seeks to create a dynamic environment by inviting young people from all around the world who are passionate about world issues.

This week-long summer program will allow students to learn communication skills from international journalists, meet with ambassadors, diplomats and NGO executives as they work collaboratively with young people from all over the globe on real-world problems. Skillsets acquired at the Summer Academy Program will be associated with:

  • Writing
  • Problem Solving
  • Social Media Activism
  • Media Toolkit (Audio, Video,
  • Critical Thinking
  • Investigative Journalism
  • Cultural Exploration

With big ideas and even bigger dreams, we are here to help you harness your passion, gather your thoughts and crystallize their vision.  ModelUN.News gives you the tools to go out in the world, armed with all the communications skills needed so you can speak up, get answers, and affect change.

Important Notes:

Students under the age of 12 must have attended at least one session of a Model UN Conference to attend the Summer Academy.

July 30th – August 5th, 20017

Registration Information:

  • Early bird registration fee is $2,500 (Deadline April 1, 2017)
  • Late registration is $2,750 (Deadline June 1, 2017)
  • Last chance registration is $2,950 (Deadline July 1, 2017)
  • Day Students will save $500 (i.e. those that don’t need housing)
  • Fees include transportation, room and board, food, UN tour and selected evening entertainment.
  • Registration does not include flight.
  • Tours of other NYC sights may be arranged at an additional cost.
  • Evening activities include a Comedy Night at one of NYC’s premier comedy clubs and Cultural Night.

Upon confirmation of academy acceptance, a non-refundable deposit of $1,000 is required (within 3 business days). Final payment is due by June 1st 2017 (contingent upon registration deadline). All fees are non-refundable.

Summer casual for classrooms

Business attire for UN, UN missions and newsroom

Casual for comedy club (no shorts or tank tops)


During the week-long program, attendees will stay at the Columbia University dorms on campus, with a meal plan and chaperones at all time.
